A center of excellence dedicated to signal transduction, namely how cells perceive messages and communicate among themselves. The focus is particularly on mitochondria and calcium ion homeostasis, which act as second messengers in all our cells; variations in their concentration lead to various biological effects, ranging from muscle contraction to hormone secretion, to name a few. Today, we know that alterations in intracellular calcium and mitochondrial functionality underlie many, if not all, pathologies.
